“Year of the Pond” is an educational project that grew out of a December 2014 visit to a beaver pond at Maryland’s Fort Frederick State Park. Fascinated by what I found there, I returned in 2015 again and again, hoping to catch a glimpse of the pond’s namesake North American Beaver. By the time I saw one cruising across the pond, I had amassed a collection of photographs and notes that begged to be shared. I committed to continuing the visits through the end of 2015 to document a full year of seasonal changes at the pond. More than two years later, I’m still visiting, still making discoveries and adding species to my catalog.
This website is dedicated to my late father, Timothy Lewis, who nurtured my love of nature through visits to parks and natural history museums, and to the staff of Fort Frederick State Park.
